Here is an update post on how I changed up my skin care routine, which has cleared up my breakouts dramatically! My skin type is normal to slightly dry.
I seem to have a very fast cell turnover. I used to exfoliate daily, but was told to stop as it is bad for your skin. Basically, over-exfoliating can damage your skin. Google to find out more.
Ever since I stopped this practice, I was left with dull skin and acne. No matter what I did to try and correct this, the problem was only solved temporarily. I feel like such a bad person for doing this, and telling you about it, but I have started to exfoliate daily again.
I'm not telling you to do the same! Please do your research first. I would, however, recommend any of the below products if you are looking for a good scrub or cleanser.
Ever since picking up my old routine, and using a combination of very gentle cleansing exfoliators at times, and stronger ones at other times, my skin has never been better!
My acne has decreased dramatically. I am having waaaay less breakouts, and they do not linger on my face for more than 1-2 days anymore. I put this down to my pores not being clogged by as many dead skin cells combined with makeup, oil, etc…. My skin is bright, soft, and my skin tone is evening out. I have had so many compliments on how my skin has been looking lately, with people even saying they think my redness has calmed down a lot!
Today, I am going to share with you my current 5 top exfoliant products and scrubs. I use each one depending on my skin on the day. I find my skin is a lot 'happier' when I change up the products I use!
(L-R) Lush Ocean Salt, Michael Todd Tropical Fruit Scrub, Oxygen 2 in 1 Cleanser, MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator, The Body Shop Vitamin C Microdermabrasion
First off, here is Lush Ocean Salt! To be described as a 'fine sea salt scrub' is a bit odd, as the third ingredient is 'coarse sea salt'. The scrub is amazing, but it does have rather large chunks of sharp salt among the fine particles. Don't get me wrong though, I love the way this makes my skin look and feel! Just be careful not to be too vigorous when scrubbing, especially if you are on the sensitive side.
After using this scrub, my skin is noticeably bright, soft and glowing. Including elements such as lime and avocado, this scrub is packed with skin-nourishing ingredients. But, because this is a sea salt scrub, be careful not to get this in/around your mouth as you scrub away your dull skin - it doesn't taste pleasant at all, and the salt can really linger on your lips! Other then that, the scent is fresh and I find that it really helps to wake me up in the morning.
Sea salt plus water have many positive attributes when it comes to skin care. Sea salt is a natural detoxifier and will absorb toxins from the surface of your skin. It also aids in the healing and cleanliness of irritated skin, and helps to reduce acne causing bacteria.
This is definitely a favourite of mine! I like to use it when my skin is feeling dull, and is in need of a brightening boost! I also find that it helps to reduce my acne if I am suffering with some unwanted breakouts. Just be careful not to scrub too hard on the effected area, or you can irritate the skin further.
Of course, as this is a Lush product, this is quite natural and is also cruelty free. This particular product also has a decent 'use by' date as well - giving you over a year before it expires.
Next up is one of my ultimate favourites, the Michael Todd True Organics Tropical Fruit Enzyme Scrub! This is a great 'everyday' scrub. Not that I use it everyday… But it is very gentle and creamy. On the front it says 'exfoliate without scrubbing', for all skin types.
This smells heavenly! Like mango and pineapple and banana… just as it says, a tropical smoothie! This product is 96% organic. It includes an array of ingredients including things such as licorice, acai fruit, banana puree, coconut oil, walnut shell powder and more!
I find this quite nourishing. Once used, my skin feels so soft… as if I had just cleansed it with a creamy cleanser. The 'beads' in this scrub are so gentle, yet still get all of the dry skin and cell buildup off of my skin effortlessly. I have raved about this one for a long time now, I'm sure you have heard it all before! I think I have used up roughly 5 of these tubes, but each tube still lasts me a good 2-3 months.
This product is also certified vegan, and made in the USA.

Next is the Oxygen 2 in 1 Cleanser for Teens. Yes, it kind of looks like a combination of snail goo mixed with snot, but I promise it is amazing.
This is a cleanser, but I am including it as a scrub because it also includes Pumice. These tiny little flakes of Pumice effectively remove dead skin cells as you cleanse your skin, and it is gentle enough to use every single day…. which I do!
For those of you who are unsure, here is Wikipedias explanation of what Pumice is;
Pumice //, called pumicite in its powdered or dust form, is a volcanic rock that consists of highly vesicular rough textured volcanic glass, which may or may not contain crystals. It is typically light colored. Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano.
This cleanser is naturopathically designed. It is also made in Nelson, New Zealand! Including natural aromas, natural actives, and organic extracts, this cleanser has been a daily staple for me recently! The product is marketed towards Teens, as it is specifically formulated for people with problem skin or acne. I find this so gentle and nourishing, perfect for an everyday cleanser.
It smells sort of odd, but not terrible. It just smells very natural, and its almost a good thing to me as it signifies no artificial perfumes and crap that may break me out. It includes ingredients such as mandarin oil, coconut oil, and aloe extract. I highly recommend trying this one if you can find it near you! I am highly interested in trying more of their ranges. Check out their website for more information on their ingredients… It makes for some very interesting (and slightly disturbing) reading!
Next is something that isn't as 'natural', but I have been loving it regardless. This is the MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator. This DOES include a bunch of chemically-sounding ingredients and perfumes…. which I hate…. but I can't help but love this. Hopefully I find a more natural replacement soon!
Now, lets get on with the reason I love this scrub. As I scrub with this, the beads dissolve into nothing, leaving me with super smooth skin. I feel like it scrubs my skin the absolute perfect amount, and then turns itself into a thick creamy product that almost feels like a mask.
From MAC; 'a highly effective, dual-purpose foaming, cleansing and exfoliating scrub blending natural Volcanic Ash with fine sugar crystals. Refines and unclogs the skin, adds instant moisture: leaves skin feeling soft and comfortably clean'. I would agree with this, as my skin never feels tight after using this product.
All in all, I just really love the consistency of this product, and it makes my skin feel awesome. This is my newest scrub, and I am thoroughly enjoying it!
Lastly, this is the scrub I use when my skin is absolutely stuffed. I use it once every 1-2 weeks, when I can feel the dead skin build up, dry patches, blackheads… All of that fun stuff.
This is the Body Shop Vitamin C Microdermabrasion Scrub. A 'weekly some-spa exfoliation. With vitamin C rich Amazonian camu camu and Community Trade shea butter. For dull skin'
This tiny berry (it's roughly the size of a large cherry) hails from the Amazon rain forests in Peru and Brazil. It contains roughly 30 times more vitamin C than an orange.
